The Fun Mail For Kids community helped complete the the JoAnna Connell Elementary School Donors Choose project of Mrs. Montie in Erie, Pennsylvania.
Fun Mail For Kids donates a percentage of all subscription sales to programs that benefit kids and help children succeed.
23 students benefitted from Mrs. Montie’s project, “Building Fluency By Listening.”
Mrs. Montie’s students needed a listening center to help build their fluency by listening to modeled reading. They also needed timers to help track their speed and progress.
Here’s how Mrs. Montie described her Donors Choose project:
My Students: My school district is the 10th largest school district in the state of Pennsylvania.
Due to economic status, all students receive free breakfast and lunch.
In the last four years, five elementary and two high schools have closed.
Many of our students come from homes that are below the poverty rate. Our classrooms lack basic supplies that are critical to the learning environment.
Our students struggle with basic reading strategies and are below grade level.
The provided reading materials are outdated, above their level, and black and white copies stapled together.
My Project: Research shows that kids learn to read by listening to good readers and practice.
Listening center benefits students
I believe my students would benefit by a listening center.
This would allow them to hear books being read at an appropriate rate with expression.
Not only would a listening center be exciting, they could read along with the CD and revisit the same text repeatedly.
The students could also track their own speed and progress by using student timers.
This would encourage them to increase speed, comprehension and fluency.
They can set goals and monitor their own progress.
These tools would be a huge benefit in increasing our reading fluency.
Mrs. Montie was very thankful for the help her class received and sent along the following note:
